Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a Federal income supplement program funded by general tax revenues, not Social Security taxes.  Unlike Social Security Disability Income (SSDI), with the SSI program there is no requirement to have worked in the past and paid into the program.  The SSI program is designated to help disabled people who have little or no income or resources.  It is meant to help provide basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing.
